Drunken Master 2 (1994)

Jackie plays Wong Fei Hung, a legendary chinese hero. Wong Fei Hung has good intentions when he tries to save his dad from paying extra taxes. He manages to smugle some ginseng into a consulates luggage at an inspection. Consulates don't have to pay taxes so they got the ginseng without paying for the taxes. The only thing left is to get the ginseng back out of the luggage compartment. This is where the problems begin. There is another case just like the one Fei Hung hid the ginseng in. Although this contains a very important Jade Seal. The thief who was trying to steal the Jade Seal ended up with Fei Hung's ginseng. This is where the fun begins. Fei Hung lost the ginseng to the thief. Since his dad forbid Fei Hung from trying to avoid taxes in the first place this was a bad thing. Fei Hung and his quick thinking step mother con Fei Hung's dad and the person who the ginseng was bought for. This lie goes terribly wrong later on. Anita Mui plays Fei Hung's step mom with grace and style. Although she does end up getting him in trouble when she convinces him that it is OK to use his drunken fist boxing on some bad guys. This only back-fires when the bad guys run off and Fei Hung ends up fighting his dad because he is too drunk to realize he should stop.

In the end Fei Hung saves the day, of course. This movie is one of my favorites, certainly among the top ten. I can only hope that it is remastered on DVD with subtitles that are finally readable because my VHS and VCD copy is the original film subtitles transfered and are small and awkwardly unreadable. Even if you can't read a thing it is still worth watching, it is that good! (That is if you like Kung Fu! And if not why are you reading this page?)

Small example of 16x9 enhancement. The images above are 16x9 enhanced, I left the original images intact without any resizing done. This image would be resized to either fit a normal standard size TV (1.33:1 ratio) loosing vertical resolution, or stretched to fill a widescreen TV preserving the extra lines of resolution encoded in the image. Below is an example of each, click to bring up a bigger picture to see what actual resolution would look like.

Drunken Master 2
CAV/Thakral
  • Format: DVD
  • Length: 102 minutes
  • Rated: NR (R equivalent)
  • Aspect Ratio: 2.0:1
  • Language: Cantonese, Mandarin
  • Subtitles: Chinese, English
  • Special Features: 3 Trailers
This version is slightly pan/scanned on the edges. See below at the first quality example versus the rest for the difference. This is a good version otherwise with a decent quality video and it is available with decent English subtitles and a Cantonese Audio Track. While the image is not as good as the Dimension 16x9 enhanced version above it does have the Original Audio track with Subtitles which is my preffered choice over watching a Dubbed in English version.

This version also features the final scene that was cut from the Dimension version in which Wong Fei Hung goes deaf and dumb from all the industrial alcohol that he drank. You can see Jackie acting out the part below in the last quality example.
