Island of Fire (1990)

Island of Fire starring: Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jimmy Wang Yu, Tony Leung, Andy Lau.

There has been a murder and the person responsible was a prisoner reported as executed 2 years earlier. A policeman (Tony Leung) is put in prison to try and find out who is faking prisoners deaths and then using them later to commit crimes. A pool champion (Jackie Chan) was paid to loose a game. His girlfriend got hurt after Jackie won anyway. The hospital wouldn't help his girlfriend unless they had money up-front to do so. Jackie took to gambling to try and get money for his girlfriends needed surgury. He won a lot of money but when he tried to leave they said he was cheating and he acidentally killed a gang boss. Jackie goes to prison for the murder but the gang wants revenge. Many paths cross, in prison we run into Wang Yu and Sammo Hung. This movie involves you in the lives of the prisoners. It makes you think about who is actually guilty and who is not. At least for me seeing Jackie put in Jail after the accidental death of the gang boss seems so unfair.

Don't see this movie as a Jackie Chan kung-fu/action movie, see it as a good prison movie featuring an extended cameo by Jackie Chan. I rather enjoyed this movie and recommend seeing it.

It's an all out battle of Martial Arts Masters when Jackie Chan (Shanghai Noon, Gorgeous, Mr. Nice Guy, Rush Hour) finds himself locked up in the most dangerous high security prison in Hong Kong. Almost beaten to death his first night, he is rescured at the last minute by fellow inmates Sammo Hung ("Martial Law", Mr. Nice Guy) and Tony Leung (Gorgeous). Together the three unveil a world of high-class criminals and corrupt prison officials. In a non-stop battle for their lives, they must combine their martial arts skills with hand to hand prison fighting to bring the corruptors to justice.

While not my favorite Jackie Chan movie, It is one of my favorite prison movies. If you havn't seen this movie before, I suggest you find it for rent and watch it. And maybe you will like it and have it find a special place in your heart to for it to add it to your collection. This is one of those movies that you just get to know the characters and you can really feel for them by the end. It's no Shawshank Redemption, but what can be other than itself? This movie I can whole-heartedly suggest. Just remember what I said above, get it for a "Prison" movie, not as a "Jackie Chan Comedy" because the latter it definatly is not.
